Program celebrates 10 years and donations of 370,000 pounds of food in Atchison
Atchison, KAN., (Dec. 19, 2023) — MGP Ingredients and local non-profit agencies teamed up this month for the tenth ‘Boxes of Blessing’ project benefiting Atchison-area families in need. Together, they distribute 25,000 pounds of non-perishable food to families in need. Since 2014, the program has provided 370,000 pounds – 185 tons – of food in Atchison.
In celebration of the 10-year Boxes of Blessing milestone, MGP supported other food-related programming for 10 days beginning Dec. 8 with: snacks at Atchison Child Care; lunch at Project Concern; and gift cards at a local grocery store.
“We’re thrilled to observe ten years of ‘Boxes of Blessing’ in Atchison. This is one of our signature community programs, an annual labor of love to help our neighbors,” said Michael Buttshaw, MGP’s vice president of Ingredient Solutions sales and R&D.
The Atchison project was inspired by a community program developed more than 20 years ago at B.C. Williams, a Dallas-based ingredients distributor and producer of custom mixes, bases and concentrates. ‘Boxes of Blessing,’ initially focused on helping families in Texas and Tennessee, was extended to the Atchison area in 2014.
Local partners included Atchison County Food Pantry at First Christian Church; the Salvation Army of Atchison County; Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas; and Pantry of Hope, along with Atchison Wholesale Grocery and the Atchison Police Department.
