Developed and produced by MGP, the MGPI Terratek® SC line of wheat starch-based biopolymers provides effective solutions to meet growing demand for eco-friendly, bio-based goods. MGPI Terratek® SC can be injection molded or extruded using standard processing machinery. Because these unique biopolymers can be formed into a variety of shapes and sizes, they have virtually unlimited applications in the production of both pliable and hard plastic products, including tableware, golf tees, credit cards, etc. MGP’s flexibility in developing polymer formulations allows us to meet many specific needs and applications based on customer requirements.
The company's line of starch-based composite polymers, MGPI Terratek® SC 50 and SC 65, are certified biobased by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) BioPreferredSM Program.
The MGPI Terratek® SC line is made from up to 70% renewable material, and can be formulated to be compostable, or durable. The finished products have the functionality and characteristics equal to those of traditional plastics.
This unique line of biopolymers is also capable of withstanding temperatures beyond boiling point and can be processed into finished products using conventional and existing technologies.
Along with environmental concerns, unpredictable costs of petroleum-based plastics have generated growing interest in renewable sources to replace synthetic materials. The development and commercialization of MGPI Terratek® biopolymers address this issue by providing viable, renewable alternatives to petroleum-based polymers while lowering the carbon footprint compared to traditional plastics.
